Hello Ivy, I didn't understand what you are asking, as far as
"kind of modem" or "AT string". The TNCs are basically radio
modems and act much like telephone modems, except that they have
to key the radio to send something. I have both Kantronics KPC-3
and 9612 and they work the same way. I plug the serial cable from the
computer, (that would normally plug into a telephone modem) into
the TNC and it has it's own command set. You need to know what to set
your software to talk to the TNC: baud, parity, stop bits. By default
it will come up a certain way (noted in the reference manual
that comes with it). You don't use "AT strings". Instead, when
yoy have the Interface set up and power on the tnc, it should
respond with some message and eventually, "cmd:" ... you would
then be in the command mode. There are commands you would want
to give the tnc, to taylor it to your use, such as your callsign,
your lat/lon (for APRS use), mailboxes, etc.
I use a standard switch box (A,B,C) to switch between my
telephone modem and my tnc. I got two tncs, because I wanted to
be able to access my home computer, while out in the field with
my kpc-3 and palmtop (HP-lx100 I use the built-in term program).
