G'day Bill,

Yeah, these things are falling over like domino's aren't they.

And if you are really unlucky the SMD resistors on the main board burn
up, carbonating the board.. effectively writing the machine off.
Anyway, FYI, I happened to come across this Samsung service sheet the
other day.. dated 18th Jan 1996
--------------------------------------------------------
Dear Service Centre,
Please find attached a "repair guide" as an aid in
the repair of the following models which have had power supply failure.
VB300 VB320 VB350 VB370
As from the date of this letter ALL units are to be repaired to
component level. NO units will be exchanged as has occured in the past.
(Rod:Apparently Samsung were replacing these free of charge)
Parts for the repair of the unit (including a kit which contains parts
which normally fail) are available from our spare parts department.
These parts will be supplied to you at no charge (the customer should
only pay the labour) provided you quote a "SAN" authority number on
your parts order.
To obtain a "SAN" number send a fax to 02-6380132 quoting the following
details: Customers name, Model number, Serial number & your fax
number. The sheet will be refaxed back to you with the "SAN" number on
it. (Ensure you quote this number when ordering spare parts)
------------------------------------------------------
I *suspect* that these free part kits are only available to authorised
Samsung agents, but nonetherless, the next one I get in I will at least
give it a go.
Among the other service notes it says..
If D158 measures defective or has visible damage the capstan motor MUST
also be changed.
ZD101 should be REMOVED (and not replaced) whether it is faulty or not.
Fit a 27v 1w Zener across R116 on the print side of the board.
------------------------------------------
What I wanna know is, if Samsung are providing these parts kits free of
charge then it is 'obviously' an admission of a design flaw, and that
being the case, why are they also not covering the labour costs too ?
BG> Seems to be heat related,
Apparently it appears that C110 is the main culprit (100/25v) .. the
kit of parts contains an "improved type" (probably high temp)
And finally, should you need it.. the kit is part# KIT-X2VCR, it
contains about 20 components, including the two IC's, IC602 (KA8301)
and IC101 (STR11006)
Cheers,
Rod
