Naturally you will shut down + power off before disconnecting or connecting
any of the disk cables.

Make sure you can boot after disconnecting each of the two drives (probably
need boot floppy as per Geo's comments).

I believe you are supposed to check the System log in Event Viewer for
errors. There are tools to regularly scan the log.
