Why do the entries remain in index.dat when I purge cookies and files?

It's the MRU entries in the address bar. If you open IE and click =
on the address bar down arrow you will see the MRU entries you typed = into
the address bar. When you clear your history this MRU is cleared.

A long while ago (in the dial-up days), I used to see in the =
registry a
list of sites I visited. I could never figure out why they were =
there,
and I haven't checked recently to see if they still are there.
