  Hmm. The plot thickens. Another suggested use for this device was measuring 
levels of liquids in tanks, which sounds not out of line for the system of 
multiple lasers you mentioned. Perhaps the "breakthrough" was in the device's 
price. I'll see if I can find out more about this on the web. A good place to 
start would be Lawrence Livermore.
