I have found that FotoAngelo which is bundled with ACDSee or available as a
stand-alone for about $30US works extremely well. It will handle just about
any format of image, and permits both a music track and sounds attached to
individual photos. It has a wealth of transitions, and is a breeze to learn
and use.
It can be set to be self-running or mouse controlled. It will scale the
images to the size of the screen automatically, without you having to know
what resolution the viewer is running. It also has a "light table" function
for putting the slides in order.
Finally it compiles everything into a single file, that can be started with
a mouse click. This is particularly great if you are sending a portfolio to
a potential client. It makes theft of image considerably more difficult,
than if you have to send a folder of the shots.
Vegas Video LE is freeware from Sonic Foundry. It is a fully functional
sub-set from their industrial strength video editing program, but this one
is limited to two video tracks and eight stereo audio tracks. Still enough
to do very sophisticated shows. It can be used with still photos and has a
wide range of transitions. A whole folder full of images can be dropped on
the time-line or they can be individually placed. Where they overlap, there
is a crossfade or other transition.
I have done some quite effective pieces in it using the Continuous Mode of
the Nikon digital, shooting at 1.5 frames per second. The result is either a
very slow frame-rate movie or very fast frame-rate slide show. It is a
constant cross-fade with the frames overlapping 50% in each direction, so
the action is very smooth. VERY interesting effect. I have done a music
track for all of these using Band-in-a-Box that I mentioned to Karen in the
previous message. While timing is a little slack in FotoAngelo, one can sync
the soundtrack with total accuracy in VV-LE.
These end up as AVIs and are much larger than FotoAngelo slide shows. Of
course with CD-ROMs, this is of little consequence.
