I would not replace those 4 formats, I would *add* 4:
mm-dd-yy (U.S.A.) short form
dd-mm-yy (Canada/England) short form
yy-mm-dd (Japanese) short form
yymmdd (Scientific) short form
mm-dd-yyyy (U.S.A.) long form
dd-mm-yyyy (Canada/England) long form
yyyy-mm-dd (Japanese) long form
yyyymmdd (Scientific) long form
