IMHO military offices are always and everywhere dull-witted, often 
stupid, unintellectual people and they cannot represent any 
civilization. Besides, the Pols are very shy of another story that had 
happened a couple decades before. And in this story can be a key.

It happened after the Russian revolution. In Soviet Russia there was a 
big havoc, both in the country and in its army forces. Poland used that 
situation and shamelessly captured  vast chunks of Russia, particularly 
western parts of Ukraine and Belorussia. A very big number of Red Army 
soldiers got prisoned by the Pols and almost all them were exterminated 
in Polish concentration camps. As for me I prefer to be killed in my 
nape with a gun than to be tortured for many years in concentration 
camp. So some people in Russia surely could have some reason to be 
merciless to the Polish officers.
