Thanks for your offer of help, Ben. If I do decide to 'take the plunge',
I may just take you up on it. Of course, I'll try 'DYI' first, though
(it's easier to remember lessons learned the 'hard way' ).

Cool. :) I just finished a 'DMA tussle' in Win98SE, a few weeks back. Short
version - m/b detected C: as UDMA Mode 5, but can only use Mode 3 (known
bug in some earlier Award BIOSes) - solution: use HDD mfr utility to
slow HDD down to Mode 3 - could finally get the 'DMA' box to stay
'checked' in Device Manager, and went from 3.5MB/S to 8MB/S.

I just finished going through the Linux CDs that I inherited a while
back, and it looks like I have Mandrake 6, and Red Hat 6. Do either of
these sound like a good match for a P233MMX, 96MB RAM? And, besides
F-Prot, are you running any other native Linux scanners?
