I seriously doubt that free memory is the problem, Phil.  Just checked and 
found that I have 291,072 in the heap before any MEX program is run from Max 
(local node).  All of my installed MEX VMs run fine with no error.
I honestly don't know what to tell you.  I think I'd check for corrupted 
files or maybe a bad FAT next, but odds on, you've already done that.  If 
you're running multi, is there any chance that one node has loads of free mem 
while another comes up short?
