If I use the product packages that SuSe supplies, then I will only have the
stable versions on my PC.  If I choose to go around the product packages,
and install current versions from source code myself, then i will need to
keep up to date with the programs I install.

However, you also need to understand that various products have differing
conventions what constitutes current, stable, release, beta, etc.   Each
project will usually describe what is what.  It's similar to
Google's beta software being a different level of quality and purpose than,
say, Symantec's beta software.
