In Ubuntu, you are supposed to use sudo to do the things you would normally
log in as root to do.
To be able to log in as root, you have to first assign it a password. To do
that, use the command
sudo passwd root
Enter your password first (as with all sudo commands), and then when
prompted enter the password you wish to assign to root. Then you can log in
as root using su.
