Hi, John;
JS>I am causing interference to a Sony Play-Station, whilst only on 50Watts
JS>10meters in SSB mode. Now, I have done every thing in my power to reduce
JS>interference by purchasing TVI filters for the effected Televisions,
hich
JS>has reduced the interference to nul. However, I still manage to 'crash'
or
JS>lock up their Play Station games Console.
Cheap junk...
JS>The question is...Since the Sony Play Station is made of plastic and has
no
JS>chance of suppressing RFI as there is no metal case or any shielding what
so
JS>ever, is it therefore the owners responsibility to shield the effected
JS>device?
Yes, it is the fault of the game maker for making their stuff as cheaply
as possible... however _IF_ you can get their permission, (and a signed
release that they will not hold you responsable for any future malfunction
as long as it's working when you return it), there are a couple of things
which you can do that _MAY_ help:
1) SHIELDING: Take the game out of it's case and rubber-cement aluminum
foil to the inside of the case, making SURE that it does not cause any
short circuits when you reassemble it. (Make sure, however, that the
foil IS connected to the game's ground). It MAY also help to give the
same treatment to the plug-in cartridges.
2) FILTERING: Get some ferrite doughnuts and run ALL leads into/out of the
case, (joystick, power and outout to the TV), through beads. It may
also help to bypass all leads between the doughnuts and the game's
"guts" with 100 Pf, 250 Volt disc ceramic capacitors. Bypass these to
the game's ground.
...
JS>I can't stand it when all the technical knowhow in the world won't cure a
JS>simple RFI problem and believe me...I've tried them all!!!
Sometimes "simple problems" require "crowbar & sledgehammer" fixes...
I cannot guarentee that my suggestions will help, but they MAY make the
problem less, and they may cure it. All I can guarentee is that it won't
hurt anything. (The reason for the release is because if you so much as
TOUCH someone else's equipment, the next time it fails for ANY reason,
they are likely to say that it was caused by your "fiddling," even if it
was caused by lightning hitting the power lines or someone dropped it on
the floor and stepped on it.
JS>There is only one thing left that may reduce the interference and that
would
JS>be to raise my antenna a little higher as currently it is (at base) 30
foot
JS>which is approx. 10 foot higher than the location of the Play Station...
Another 10 feet wouldn't make a noticable difference.
