Check the tracking control.  It often overlooked, but is an important 
adjustment when playing tapes made on other machines.
Also, is this distorted area only on a few tapes, or all tapes?  Is it on 
tapes just recorded on the new deck, or only old tapes, recorded on 
another deck?  If it shows up on tapes recorded on the new deck, to those 
tapes play OK in another deck?
Answers to these questions may not help you get things working, but they 
will help the repair facility if you need to send it back.
