TM> Why is it that you can never loose your crappy lures. I can take lures
TM> that never catch fish, and pull up sunken Tug Boats from the bottom of
TM> the lake without the lure breaking off. Heck my favorite lures usually
TM> break off when I'm tying the knot. Another thing, why is is that some
TM> lures will get hung up and refuse to come free or break off. I mean
TM> there are times when Godzilla couldn't rip this lure from the bottom
TM> of the lake. And how about bullet weights? It's like bullet weights
TM> and plastic worms want to see how many times they can hang up in a 5
TM> minute period. And it's always some tiny little twig poking out. Oh
TM> and bullet weights are really fun to try and unsnag. At first you try
TM> and be gentle and quiet. Then you resort to sheer brute force. Then
TM> you end up apologizing to your buddy with the weight embedded in his
TM> back, "Ummm...sorry my fault. Can I have my weight back...ohhhh never
TM> mind you just keep it?" Then you spend the rest of the day more
TM> worried about what's going to happen every time he draws back to cast.
Thanks for confirming something I always suspected. No matter how
unsnaggable a lure is, a fisherman will find ways to get it stuck.
Actually I have good luck with soft plastic lures rigged weedless.
I cast soft plastic grubs into weeds and branches - really
tangled, inpenetrable places - and they just pull out, no snags, no
lost lures. That's why I love soft plastics. They are cheap and
dont get snagged like things with treble hooks. I call treble hooks
"trouble hooks" now. Tackle shops sell soft plastic minnows - fin-s fish
or something like that - I bury the hook in them and in the water
they look a lot like minnows. They are weedless if I bury the hook.
I cut a slit in the bottom of the lure and use a smaller hook, maybe size
6 or 8. The point of the hook is buried in plastic at the top of the lure
but the shank of the hook rests in the slit. The eye of the hook sticks
out the front of the plastic lure. That way, when I set the hook
the point only has to penetrate a millimeter or so of plastic. It's
weedless, but the hook point is there when I need it. With 4 pound test
I find I dont need a sinker when casting the average plastic grub.
I like soft plastics in the middle of Summer when weeds are
thick.
