Private Virtual Gun Rights Conference
This message is directed to Tanya Metaksa, Neal Knox, Alan Gottlieb,
Larry Pratt, Joe Tartaro, John Snyder, and the rest of our commanders
in the political fight for RKBA.
Funding is down this year, right? We are more dependent than
ever on grass-roots activists, such as the NRA Members Councils,
the Paul Revere Network, and NOBAN.
And here we have Bob Dole, supposedly our only hope against four
more years of Bill Clinton, pulling a typical Nixonian, me-too
Republican stunt of distancing himself from the gun owners who
put the Republican Party in control of both houses of Congress
just two years ago.
The activists won't put up with this, and you're going to be
preaching to empty pews, if this isn't fixed, and fixed now.
I'm not making a threat or even a prediction: it's a simple,
concrete observation. Just look at the letters in Noban since
Dole's waffling on the assault-weapons ban repeal.
The issue isn't what deals you can cut in the back rooms, so
that we get better legislation in the next session. The issue
is that Bob Dole just fed the liberal media's propaganda that
more guns in the hands of the people means more crime. It isn't
enough for the Republican presidential candidate to be luke-warm
about private gun ownership. We need a strong PUBLIC affirmation,
in practical political terms, that Bob Dole understands the
Kleck study's meaning -- that private guns save lives and reduce
crime. If his campaign doesn't know how to present this to
the American people, it's our job to show them how to present it
as a winning political issue.
If the Dole campaign doesn't understand that they can't win without
the grass-roots gun activist -- which right now looks as if it's
going to splinter all over the political map -- then you might
as well just get used to four more years of the Clintons.
But, if the Dole folks understand that we are a necessary part
of any possibility of their victory, then I suggest Bob Dole
make a pro-RKBA speech pretty darned soon, challenging the media
and Clinton to refute Marvin Wolfgang's statement about the
National Self Defense Survey.
Clinton is trying to make guns a political liability for Dole.
Dole's only hope on this issue is a frontal assault on the CDC's
fraudulent studies, and endorsing interstate CCW recognition as
an asset in the war against crime.
If Dole doesn't do something on this order, you've lost the crowd
and the election.
Neil
