Mark,

Never use the word "literal" application for the Bible.  It uses
the context of the time to set forth principles in a larger sense. 
"Principled" application would make more sense.

Also, "today's world" is mighty screwed up.  Remember Acts 17:6;
Paul and Silas are chased by an angry mob who refer to them as the people
who are turning the world "upside down."  Well, maybe what they
were doing was turning the world right-side up!
