 I ran into this recently too, I thought it was becauseI had been accessing my
server from my laptop, which might have different TERM settings.

So I spent  a little  time changing the $TERM variable with no luck. "xterm"
made the boxes completely solid grey with no visible text. xterm-256color,
ansi-bbs, vt100, and other terminal types gave me black & white.
