About Whitehorse, On Sat Sep 04 2004

SH> WE never did get much rain this summer and burned more hectares of
SH> forest this summer than they did in all of Canada last year. And
SH> Alaska has had major forest fire problems as well.

That would leave lots of black up there and not very good for the
ecosystem, it does take a long time to grow trees up there.

SH> I've always figured that because you're south of us, you should have
SH> better soil and I have seen the crops that farmers grow on my drives
SH> from Fort St. John to Grimshaw and back. But clay can be a bitch

North of the Peace there seems to be better soil than we have here.

SH> and I can see where straw and other good stuff should help. As for
SH> compost, I can't even get my &^%$#{at} bin to do what it should do. :-(

There are compost starters out there that help, in your case you might want
to ensure the composter is Black in colour and in front of a metal garden
shed, also facing south. We had one in such a type of location that was
steaming in the winter, at -40 even. We have two composters here one is a
square black plastic one that we use in the winter to put our stuff in
there so there is not a long walk to the one in the back which is a
windshield crate.

SH> with more chickweed than I want to see.:-(

Most people say that about chickweed, but you can eat that stuff, we like
pigweed here, better than spinach and Swiss chard put together.

SH> Your wife's thoughts make sense to me. However, we do like a fair
SH> number of geraniums.

I like Godetia, and some other annuals. So annuals are my department when
I feel like doing them.

Hope this helps. Keep us posted.

We are a fine board trying to make it better.
