In some cases, this is extremely problematical. Some motherboards have no
discharge jumper, nor do they have a connector for an add-on battery, which
can be shorted (probably not a good thing to do, but it sometimes does the
trick). In most cases, the discharge jumper and add-on battery connector are
combined, but if there is neither, you are often forced to desolder the
on-board capacitor/battery, and wait for up to several hours for the CMOS to
discharge.
