KJ> The poor baby Jenday--I can't get her brooder cool enough. It's 92.5F in
KJ> there. She's 5 weeks old, 1/2-way feathered, VERY heavily down-
>Suggestion: Take her out of the brooder and put her in one of those
>plastic baskets with all the holes.
I tried that. It continued to get hotter in there. It went up to 98F in
that room before it was all through. I ended up putting ICE wrapped in a
towel into the container with her. Took the temp down to 88F which she
didn't seem to mind, and that's how we survived until the weather cooled
a bit. It's still miserable here, but at least it's in the high 80's
now, instead of the high 90's.
>Several years ago when I worked in a pet shop we had trouble with crop

That was my fear with this kid--but she took it like a desert trooper!
She just panted and held her wings out a lot--no change in digestion
rate at all, no weight loss, nothing but panting.
>I don't know how the parents get away with it...when they breed in the
>heat.
I was concerned when this one was being incubated--it got really hot in
the box about a week before she was due to hatch. Again, she did fine.
Maybe that hot spell acclimated her to warm weather a bit somehow? I
dunno...
>I was so sure it was too hot to lay eggs that I didn't notice that the

In the past, heat has seemed to trigger my cherry-heads to nest too. I'm
waiting to see if it affects them again this year. It's 84F, 72%
humidity in my BASEMENT.
>They say that it is cooler up there now.
Who's THEY? They's wrong... Well, it IS cooler, I guess... 85F
instead of 95F. Still uncomfortable if one has no A/C. Sleeping in this
weather requires two fans; one to pull outside air IN, and another to
circulate it through the room. I'm finding I seem to have developed
arthritis from all this night-time draftiness...
One good thing; the adult conures and the tiels seem to be unaffected by
the heat, other than being louder than usual (if that's possible).
