Quoting DAVID CALAFRANCESCO in a message to GLENN MENZIE

Bingo. Or rather, pingo. The ISP pinged alright via IP (it hadn't via
the domain name) and when I read through the APARS noticed the resolv
(couldn't find a resolv2, is it missing or optional?) file was not
being updated properly on occassion when DOIP settings were changed
(system added, deleted).
They suggested deleting the resolv as a local fix which I did.
Reentered the information, new resolv created and we're off to the
races.
Thanks very much for the pointer.
