That could have been an expensive lesson. I know of NO surge protector
marketed for home use that will protect you from a direct strike on your
lines. When it's possible, it's always best to disconnect everything you
value during thunder storms.

Have you tried resetting the NVRAM to factory defaults? That's always a good
place to start, after that try an analog loop-back test. If all else fails,
USR's Tech Support line for Courier modems is 800-550-7800.
