He did not paint on the photograph.  It was just a 4x6 on a card.  What he
did was use the scene in the photo to inspire a new original painting of
his own.  A photographer friend of mine was upset when her sister-in-law
did that with one of her favorite photos.  She says it's a copyright
violation.  But in this case, I don't mind a bit. :)
