If you're one of the many educators who've glued hardware
together as it was donated you may be interested in
knowing about the longstanding AT&T Echo on FidoNet.

A tremendous ammount of the old AT&T 6300s were purchased
by educational systems and actually -- though mostly IBM
compatible -- require special "care & feeding".

Are you aware of the patches for fixing the "date problem" ?
Would you like to squeeze the absolute most out of the old
"XT" by upgrading to the newer ROM-BIOS and slipping in the
NEC V-30 chip (yes, the '286 clone)? It's "pin compatible".

They're fantastic for BBS service, even multitasking under
DESQview. I was in a WordPerfect window when a child from Sweden
dialed my board once (Window #1), he'd skipped across the internet
to UCDavis and used the dialouts to enter the (916) area code. :)

...anyway, if this type of hardware tweeking on the AT&T 6300 or
6300+ might be of interest to you there is high quality support
that has been available that is in danger of being lost.

The conference has got to stay "on topic" for these machines
but they were in really common use in education circles.

For the most part you'll find FidoNet Echos a lot more friendly
and less intimidating than internet newsgroups -- hobbyist in
spirit -- but plenty qualified. Wonderful source of help.

Ask your system operator to pick the echo up if you think
this may help you out. You'll be glad you did.

Best,
