Hi Stefan,

 SW> and CHESS_TOURNEY from zone 1, SCHACH.GER in zone 2,
SW> CHS.HUMAN and CHS.LIGA2 in the Chessnet, and quite a few

What is zone 2? Is the Chessnet a network of its own, or is it part of
another network?

SW> Be careful :-) The literal German translation of "Bonjour"
SW> is "Guten Tag", but if you say this here you will most
SW> probably get killed. It is completely Prussian and may not
SW> be used here in Bavaria :->

Good grief :) If I ever go overseas, I should probably keep such things in
mind! What does "Guten Tag" mean?

SW> The problem with Bruce seems to be solved now, as you
SW> answered a rather new letter of him on the 17th, while
SW> writing to me on the 16th?

Yes, apparently he got my message, started responding, got interupted and
never finished.

SW> James Mccullough - wasn't he the guy who said he had only
SW> one chessboard and therefore could play only one game?

Yes, but he hasn't even sent me a response and I was trying to start a game
with him. I believe that you're playing a game with him, right? If this is
correct, could you ask him for me if he got my letter & resend?

SW> I see. We don't have percentual averages here, but mark/points
SW> averages. Last year (in grade 11) I had an average of 1.6 (we have
SW> marks from 1 to 6 with 1 the better one), which put me on place 2
SW> of the about 90 pupils. In grade 12 and 13 the marks system
SW> is completely different. We get points from 0 to 15 (with
SW> 15 being best). I did very bad this year (spent too much
SW> time playing chess :->>) and had an average of 11,3 points
SW> in 12/1 and won't be much better in 12/2.

It must be confusing to have your mark system change on you, does it only
happen in grade 12 & 13? By 12/1 & 12/2 do you mean 1st and 2nd semester?

 AR> What's jurisprudence?
SW> The knowing of laws (if you know Latin you know every word :-))

That's what I thought, but I didn't want to look like a fool if it turned out
to be something completely different. Do you know Latin? I know a few people
who know a bit of Latin, it's amazing how many words they can decipher through
their knowledge of Latin!

SW> Opening is the biggest problem... If he does not play the Giuoco Piano
SW> or one of the gambits I know by chance, I have no real chance to
SW> get to the middlegame :-(
SW> I play correspondence chess mostly to improve my opening knowledge.

With general opening knowledge, I'm usually able to get through the openings
that I don't know. In such circumstances, I'm often surprised when in the
post-mortem analysis I find that I'd followed book moves to sometimes 10 +
moves! I usually manage to get good positions out of the opening, then blow
it in the middlegame, usually due to tactics I didn't notice. (blunders,
blunders, blunders will you never end? :) )

SW> BTW: Saw a message of you asking for a good international
SW> chat echo. I can recommend ESPRIT. English, German, Dutch
SW> and a couple of other languages are allowed there. I don't
SW> know if French is actually allowed, but it will be if
SW> someone agrees to work as a Co-Mod for that language.

Is it a busy echo? My sysop doesn't feel inclined to waste money DLing an
echo that I only have 1 or a few conversations in. Also, use of French would
be important and I don't speak it well enough to be a Co-Mod (& don't really
have the time either) and I don't think the person I'm interested in talking
with (Gilles Fauvie) has the time either. It's too bad we can't find a
suitable echo - through me speaking French and Gilles speaking English, we
would have both benefited greatly in language skills.
Regards, Adrien.

... Back up my hard disk? I can't find the reverse switch!
