I believe the netmail file open / close functions are seperate from the echomail file / open close functions..... mabye.... hmmmm... There is some different processing in squish for netmail than for echo mail..... You could start looking for such code differences on how files are opened and closed in the squish code (maximus/squish subdirectory).... Take care.....
