With multiple ports using IRQ3, it had to have been SIO.  COMM.SYS
complains real loud at that.  I tried to get COMM.SYS to allow me to
assign an i/o port as com1 when the mouse already had the default com1
and never could get it to work.  Registered SIO and never looked back. 
PMLM was worth the registration price and Vmodem has been a bonus :-}
