One problem with compressing the netmail packets is that you have to have
owner read / write / execute permission on the various directory locations
used and be running with a consistant USER ID.  Squish defaults to a 700
mask on creating files.....  If you don't know what I'm talking about,
please ask for more info.     This user ID / default permission issue can
result in a problem like what you are describing if you have some processes
running under a different UID from other processes (related to handling the
mail packets), or different from the UID of the directories used...
