I think that the veiled threat is exactly what he's doing. The
administration seems to be returning to this kind of attack now that
they're seeing some real opposition from Congress. They're appealing to
the Kool-Aid drinking base right now (those who will believe anything
unconditionally if it comes from the government, and the heck with facts).
An even sneakier example was Tony Snow's comment regarding the pending
resolution against the war. I wish I could find the exact wording, but
the gist was: who are you sending a message to? The President? The
American people? or Al-Qaeda?
We're back to the early days after 9/11 when we were advised to keep our
mouths shut. I expect to be hauled in as an enemy combatant any day...
