That's one take on the subject. Here's another:
The public will accept incremental gun control because each step in the 
process is perceived as being "reasonable". Sweeping gun control, 
however, will cause the electorate to revolt and toss the gun grabbers 
out. I know this is Monday morning quarterbacking, but it may be true 
that engineering compromises does more long term damage than a direct 
confrontation would have.
