Because they want you to use windowsupdate, I told you guys that 2 years ago.
Why do you think they do stuff like release 11 patches with 8 versions of
each for the monthly update instead of releasing just one executable? You
don't really believe that there is a reason for releasing 88 executable
patches beyond adding complexity to keeping up to date without using
windows update do you?
Remember the NT4 days when they would release one executable and it would
patch all versions, pro, server, advanced server, ie2, ie3, ie4, iis2,
iis3, iis4 all in one? It can be done and it did work and made it very
simple to stay patched manually. Why on earth would they not make the
manual method work that way today?
Because they want to make security a service they provide, that way they
can shut off the service when they discontinue support for an older version
and it's now easier to upgrade than to patch a reinstalled machine.
Ask the important question now, when they discontinued support for NT4, why
didn't they make one final rollup so that anyone who wanted to use it could
be patched up to date with a single last service pack. Should be a
copyright requirement that they do this else the copyright expires on the
day they drop support. As it stands now, the version they filed with the
LoC to get an enforceable copyright is incomplete.
