subject: elite 2864 in kernel mode

A rather disturbing thing happened today. This morning all of the leds of my
zyxel elite 2864 were burning brightly. I did try to reset the modem by
shutting down its power and turning it on again. After that the cd led kept
burning. I quickly exchanged the elite for the good old u1496e+ to keep the
system running.
Later today I checked the elite on another system and discovered it said it
was in kernel mode and ready to accept a flash-rom for upload. After
restoring the firmware everything looks allright again. Even the non-volatile
ram was loaded with the mailer-settings as before. In the year and three
months that I am using the elite now, I have had a non-responding modem maybe
once or twice before (this has never happened with the u1496e+). But it then
reverted to normal function by shutting down its power and putting it on
again.
My elite is an international model (afaik), and it was loaded with firmware
version 1.13.
Now I have some questions:
- Did anybody experience the same problem?
- If so did he/she discover why it had happened?
- And if so, was it a hardfware-problem or a software-problem?
 Lodewijk.
