Have to give em credit there. It is the best of the viewers and gives
the broadest range of outputs. It's available for the Mac now too,
but not Linux or other nix's. I hate using the Apple QuickTime viewer
with it's nasty, "do you want to give us your credit card number now
or should we bug you next time" question. Best part of the Winmedia
player 9 is it will say this is an unsupported format when you tell it
to be the default viewer for a .mov file, but after that will go ahead
and open and run them with no problems for me on win98se.

The same movie, a short at 1,314,224kb as an avi file is 418,057kb as a
quicktime mov clip, Shrinking it in quality a lot makes for a 127,457kb
quicktime mov file. As an mpeg1 it becomes a 58.838KB file with much
better quality. With a slight reduction in size and frame rate for the
web, it is a 10,865kb wmv file.

Ln> I do the conversion in SoundForge.

I use the SoundForge Studio version mostly for eliminating clicks
and noises. A really good program in my opinion. I seldom stop at
audio editing there though. My sounds usually pass through several
other editing and mixing stages before the finished product appears
 as a background sound track.

You can download a free encoder here. Gives you a few more option
 choices than the built-in's do.
