Hi William,
You asked:
WH>I'm a bit poor, and I wondered if anyone knew exactly what
WH>was in a 10BaseT hub. Is it feasable to build one yourself?
WH>Is it simply a passive connector (with amplifiers?) or is
WH>there more to it than that?
I don't know what is in one (the one I have has jungle chip and a few
support bits), but given that a cheap 8 port one costs 39 pounds (the
one with a BNC port is 45 pounds) (+ del & VAT) and includes a mains
power supply module I doubt if there is much you can do yourself for
that much money.
WH>Also, apparently twisted pair has a 600ohm impedance. If I
WH>found a suitable 50ohm600ohm balun tranformer, would it
WH>enable me to connect 10Base2 to 10BaseT? Would it be
WH>compatible with existing 10BaseT systems?
No! Sorry :-(. 10Base2, being coax, has only two wires, while 10BaseT
uses two pairs, one transmit, one receive.
From the supplier quoted above (PCP), the cost of a BNC/UTP converter is
higher (at 59 pounds) than the 8 port hub with BNC connecter :-(.
I find it amazing!!!!
