It doesn't matter if it's genuine or not. If you bought windows from a
microsoft reseller, OEM, anyone who you can prove is an authorized
representative of the company (like if they provide support and have
Microsoft certification) and you buy a computer from them that they claim
has genuine windows on it then you own a genuine copy even if the vendor
pirated it.

We had this exact situation with the software we run at PPE, the VAR never
licensed us but instead used a copy from another customer and pocketed the
money. I busted him for it and our lawyers forced the software maker to
GIVE us a valid license since we could prove that we paid their sales
outlet for the product. We also received compensation for our time and
legal costs from the VAR. I have copies of the first 2 checks from the VAR
framed on the wall in my office as a reminder.

If for example you have a Dell and MS were to claim that your copy of
windows is not genuine, you could sue both the vendor and MS and win both a
legal license and damages. A few people like me doing that, a little
publicity, and all this nonsense from MS would end.
