Completed my new listening area yesterday and was really blown away
by the difference! While I don't get anything too much beyond 180 degrees
from the Sonic Holography, I am thrilled with that. The changes have opened
up the sound stage dramatically, cleared the lower mid range where many of
the instruments had seemed slightly veiled, and brought a razor sharp report
to the bass. It is as if I bought a brand new, mega bucks system. I have
never heard anything sound better.(And that is still with all Carver gear!)
The rear channels are now almost (about 12 inches less) the same
distance to the listening position as are the mains. With a little tweak of
the delay control they fell right into sync and sound extraordinary, despite
the fact that the rears are just Elcheapo Bose Model 100s.
Both music and soundtracks have improved beyond what I would have
dreamed of and for the first time I am completely satisfied with the entire
system. One thing I did notice and cannot explain. When I went from a Laser
disk soundtrack to a music CD I neglected to turn off the Pro-Logic. I had
done this before and it didn't sound too bad.....just different. This time it
sounded TERRIBLE! I couldn't even begin to explain what all sounded wrong. It
was like Murphy took over the controls. As soon as I took the Pro Logic off
line, it was great. I didn't think Pro Logic was suppose to sound that bad,
just different.
I was able to get my mains 20 inches from the wall behind them and
three feet from either side wall. At a 12 ft distance to the listening
position and 11 feet between speakers I could detect no difference between
the speakers being toed in or not regardless of the source material.
I have run through a couple dozen CDs of different types of music and
clicked in and out of Sonic Halography on each. I have yet to find a type of
music that does not sound better with it engaged! I even ran it with the
sound tracks, which I didn't care for the effect before, and they too sounded
better. It not only adds to the depth of the sound stage, but seems to wrap
the sound out to the sides and beyond the speakers more naturally. It also
takes out the extreme harshness of a couple older CDs that I have and makes
them easier to listen to. I had played with the idea of replacing the Carver
pre amp with a unit that has Pro logoc and AC3, but do not want to be without
the Sonic Halography now.
Looks like I finally got something really right for a change. But I
cannot help being curious why my CDs sound so awful in Pro Logic. Any ideas?
Cheers, John
