Sounds like a familiar tale.
I was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder by one shrink, (nice
catch-all for "she's messed up but we're not sure how") bipolar by another,
and when I went back to the one that decided I was bipolar with the idea of
being evaluated for ADHD, I walked out fifteen minutes later with a
prescription. This disturbed me to no end.
I found a shrink who actually did an evaluation and gave me several pages of
techniques designed to cope with ADHD as well as instructions to keep him
updated on how it was working for me and an appointment for the following
week. Despite his thoroughness, he told me that he didn't have a lot of
experience with ADHD patients and that he would want to keep in close touch
o
he could learn from my experiences with treatment and non-pharmaceutical
techniques.

Out of the dozen or so that I've had, this guy was the ONLY ONE who came
lose
to doing what I consider to be a psychiatrists basic job description.
