I am neither an engineer, chemist, nor a mechanic. But, I don't
believe that the purpose of a catalytic converter was/is to
remove lead. The first car I had with one was a new 74 Malibu,
the thing actually smelled up my whole garage. Like sulfur?
The owners manual stated NOT to use leaded gas as it would ruin the
converter. That is why they had that plug to prevent using the larger
nozzles on the leaded gas pumps. At that time they said a converter's
life expectancy was 50k miles. A replacement was around $200 ? If the
purpose was to remove lead why would the company say not to use it?
Why two size nozzles, and why the plug in the filler neck????
They did have an initial problem. The converters were extremely
hot. The first ones started fires if parked on a lawn, while
still hot. €
Of course back then Scanners used crystals, to not stray to
far off topic....
