subject: `puter-tech curriculm 1/2

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for some feedback/discussion on the following
sketch for a 6th grade computer tech class.
                     Techno- notes
( a process thing, please add any
                              thoughts )
Here are some of the things that I'm thinking a student
leaving the 6th grade computer-tech class ought to have
accomplished. This is only a draft and .... well, you know
about that, I expect there will need to be a lot of changes as
these things get worked through. Some of these are obvious,
stuff they already know or have previous experience with.
Then there will be the new stuff that develops.
I guess the important thing to consider is that computers are tools
to help people be more productive in whatever it is that they do.
               Systems
Students should be able to demonstrate how a computer system
operates:
1 - using responsible behavior in the handling of
hardware and software
2 - using computer terminology (bit, byte, RAM, ROM,
monitor, disk drive, cpu, clockspeed, keyboard, mouse, floppy
drive, cache, harddrive, cdrom drive, hardware, software,
printer.
Students should be able to use Mac, DOS and Windows computer
environments:
1 - using the basic dos commands (copy, format, cd, md
ect) in the correct syntax to set up and use a variety of
software, within the structure of the path .
2 - use filenames and extentions to recognize and create
executables , texts, pictures, letters , ect
    3 - using compression/decompression commands (pkzip ect)
to maximize the use of disk space and to access
 shareware/freeware software.
   4 -
Keyboarding
Students continue the skill development of typing,
emphasizing the use of alphabetic and numeric keys with
increasing speed and accuracy.
1 - demonstrate correct technique ( posture, fingering
         ect )
2 - properly use all alphabetic and numeric keys
3 - Use correct spacing after punctuation
4 - recognize and correct typographical errors
5 - complete a timed test with typing speed equal to or
         greater than their handwriting speed.
     6 -
Word processing
Students continue to increase their knowlage about the
operation of word processing software
1 - use word processing in all stages of the writing
        process.
2 - Demonstrate the steps nessessary to use the basic
function of a word processor (using files, documents,
word wrap, cursor, scrolling, screen display as basic
       terminology)
3 - Use standard document formatting rules by using and
changing format functions (margins, line length, tab
        settings and page format.
4 - Use block functions (move , copy, cut, paste,
         import, export)
5 - Use accessories ( spell checker, grammer checker,
        thesaurus to correct mistakes)
6 - Integrate word processing documents with
spreadsheets, databases and/or graphics to create
        documents
7 - Create class assignments (letters, lists,
compositions, ect) from content area studies.
     8 -
Data Bases
1 - Demonstrate the steps nessessary to use the basic
        functions of database construction (categories,
fields, search rules, arranging data layout)
2 - Create report files and printouts using a sort
        procedure
3 - Create new databases that provide solutions for
specific uses in another area of study .
    4 -
               Spreadsheets
Students cover the spreadsheet basics that include how to
create, edit, print, save, rename, and retrieve electronic
   spreadsheets.
1 - Input, edit, and erase data
2- Cut, copy, paste and fill
3 -Format data with numeric format, typefaces,
           styles, colors, sizes and alignments.
4 - Highlight data using borders, shading, and automatic
            styling
5 - Set, change, and adjust column widths and row heights.
6 - Perform simple mathematical formulas (using functions
summation, average, maximum value, and minimum)
7 - Create, adjust, delete, and print simple graphs.
