Hi, Chuck;
CP> What do I need to do to get any type of ham license? I was a
CP> radio-telephone installer/operator in the Army and worked with both AM
CP> and FM radios. Morse Code was't something I lerarned in the particular
CP> field I was in, but it should't be too very difficult for me to
CP> pick-up, from what limited knowledge I do have about licenses, i
CP> understand that it is a requirement. But what exactly does it take,
CP> since I don't know anyone who is into ham radio?
A little theory and a few regulations will get you a no-code Technician
license which will allow you all Amateur priveledges abouve 50 MHz. If
you worked with radio equipment in the Army, this one should be duck
soup for you with only a little study. Once you pass that, passing a
code test at only 5 WPM will give you a Tech Plus license, and add CW
priveledges on most of the popular bands between 3.5 and 30 MHz.
Passing a 13 WPM code test and a stiffer written test will get you a
General class license, which is the most popular. This gives you
priveledges on all Amateur bands. Another written test will get you an
Advanced license, and if you can pass yet another written test and copy
13 WPM, you can get an Extra class license - the highest class.
If there is a Radio Shack store near you, stop in and pick up a copy of
Now You're Talking, published by the American Radio Relay League, (ARRL),
or you can get the no-code book by Gordon West. Either book will cost
you around $10.00.
I presume you live in or near Sugarland, TX, (where the BBS is that you
call), I suggest that you contact:
W5YI-VEC,
P.O. Box 565101
Dallas, TX, 75356-5101
Phone: 817-461-6443
They will probably know when the testing will be done in your area, and
can probably point you to classes held by a local Ham club, though
classes are not necessary for most people.
You could also contact the ARRL at:
The American Radio League Attn. Bart J. Jahnke
225 Main St.
Newington, CT. 06111
They could tell you of any ARRL-affiliated clubs in your area, and may
also know when classes and testing will be held.
73 (Best regards) DE (From) KB9QPM (My call).
