Actually that's just the second half, you go to windows update and it tells
you there is a new version of windows update, if you check it out it says
wga and you can't refuse that part. Then once you have that, which btw is
the part that confirms whether or not your copy passes the test and reports
the results to MS, they offer you the second half which
"notifies" you if it's not valid.

You don't need the second half to get "critical" security
updates, but there are other security fixes that are not considered
critical that you can't get if you don't accept it.

Since MS already owns your ass you may as well accept the second half.
