Dear Deforest:
Catalytic converters do not remove lead from the exhaust. They catalyze, or
encourage, the burning of hydrocarbons that have left the combustion chamber
without burning. As a result, the percent of the exhaust composed of unburned
hydrocarbons is substantially reduced.
Thank about it--if CC's removed lead, wouldn't you have to stop from time
to time to get the lead out of your converter? CC's are damaged by lead in
the gas, so the last thing you want is leaded gas in your car. Now that
leaded gas is finally gone, cars still don't have perfect combustion, so
either a CC or an air injection system is used to keep the unburned
hydrocarbons low.
There are few health benefits to having the air full of lead compounds.
 Yours, Blair
