while I do believe there is some demand for a filtered dns service (like
there is demand for filtered email) I have to argue with the above
statement. ALL dns servers cache IP addresses and the local ISP's dns
servers are going to be closer to you and respond faster so this is a
really bogus statement that it makes sites faster. (not to mention W2K and
XP's client cache service which does the caching at the local machine).
I think marketing is really pushing it with some of their claims.
I also think dns filtering can be dangerous, for example while it will
protect you from say resolving windowsupdate.microsoft.com it can also
completely hose your mail server if they resolve domains that should not
resolve in an effort to be "user friendly".
For example, some mail servers will reject mail from invalid domains like
bob.og because it's obviously a fake return address but if the helpful dns
service automatically resolves it to bob.org then bob.org is going to be
getting a ton of email connections that they don't want or need.
People should have to deal with their own typo's, other innocent bystanders
should not have to deal with their mistakes.
