For years I have read and heard many people say that more
loudspeakers are damaged or ruined by underpowered amps than blown out by
overpowering the drivers. I had come to accept this as fact after hearing it
so often. The "control" exercised by the higher powered amps usually came up
during the conversations and in the article(s) as well.
Now that I have read some of the responses to my repeating that in
the Echo, I have to question it. I also am wondering about the tubed amps I
see that run twenty watts ands under. One in particular (if memory serves me)
is a six watt single ended. I have also read that power ratings as they
relate to tubed amps "is different" than electronic units. If the first
statement was true, would not tubed gear be going through loudspeakers to a
noticable degree?
So what if anything is true about the underpowered amps causing speaker
damage, and higher powered amps exercising more control? And, what is
"different" about power ratings for tubed amps than electronic?
I have been reading ads for the lesser priced tube amps and following
the Tube Newsgroup on the Internet with the intent of purchasing an
inexpensive unit just to tinker with and learn enough to purchase a better
quality unit. Knowing about the above would be a big help.
Cheers, John
