Since Guy Putnam yelled this at Steve Henderson, I hollered this in response:
MS> I remember when the USMC used them as light artillery in Beirut
MS> before the bombing.
SH> The Marines have -never- used the TOW as artillery.
GP> As I recall, it was LAWS rockets.
Rockets aren't artillery. For that matter, the LAAW isn't a rocket. It is
a missile.
SH> Artillery is, by definition, an indirect fire weapon.
GP> How about 105's loaded with fleshettes?
The 105 Recoilless Rifle never fired flechettes, per se. It fired a solid
projectile that -exploded- into anti-personnel fragments. From what I
remember (the 105 -was- on its way out as obsolete as I was going in), this
was -still- an indirect fire weapon.
SH> The TOW is line-of-sight only.
GP> Maybe so, but it will deliver some shrapnel down-range . . . . .
No, it won't. It delivers an -anti-armor- explosive shaped charge with
extremely high accuracy. At NO time has the TOW ever been used as an
anti-personnel weapon.
