MS>DT> Interesting article and I agree with your conclusion. It is
MS>DT> important
MS>DT> to note that this same computer that Kasporv defeated would
MS>DT> probably defeat approximately 95% of the chess players in the
MS>DT> world today.
MS> So what?
MS> If you're using this statement to "prove" the superiority of
MS>technology over the human mind in complex reasoning, I could "prove"
MS>the reverse by saying Bobby Fischer could beat 95% of living
MS>chessplayers.
You make a good point here Matt. But what you say doesn't diminish what
I said. I am not trying to "prove" that technology is superior to the
human mind. After all, the human mind created the technology. The
human mind is, just as you said, a complex reasoning instrument. The
computer may act like it is reasoning, but it is not. It is simply
responding to its programming. All I am pointing out is that while Deep
Blue may not beat the "Top" players in the world, it is still quite an
accomplishment for (human) programmers that their machines can beat 95%
of the world's chess players. But they cannot prevent me from
unplugging the darn thing when it beats me.
Take care, Dan
