Hello All,
In general, I don't like music in Dutch. It's a difficult language to create
good lyrics. But now I have discovered something very good. And since some of
you listen to German or Scandinavian music, I thought dutch must get a
hance.
(I am not Dutch, I'm Belgian - Dutch is the official language of the northern
part of Belgium, Flanders. Just to avoid confusion).
There have been some discussions on Dutch Prog bands in the echo, but I
presume these used English lyrics. The record I want to talk about (yes, it's
just one album) is in Dutch.
It's called _Nacht en Ontij_ ('Night and Tempest' would be the closest
translation I can think of) by Boudewijn de Groot. He is actually a
long-haired accoustic guitar-playing hippie, covering and translating songs
like 'Goodnight, Mr. President' and 'The Universal Soldier', very "un-prog"
and certainly "un-rock" music. But _Nacht en Ontij_ is completely different.
He dimself doesn't really like it, and he objected to it being remastered for
CD release. But (forunately) the record company got its way.
It's about magicians and witches. It has an orchestra. It has strange sound
effects, volume and balance shifts, rainstorm sounds, ...: all elements of a
true progrock record.
I don't think you can find it anywhere outside Belgium & The Netherlands.
Sorry.
