This is especially true in the end game.  I have had positions that were 
defendable by the computer side but the computer simply could not see 
the need to defend strategic squares.  Getting to the end game is the 
difficult part because in the opening and the middle game it is 
programmed strongest.
As far as Deep Blue is concerned, it is out of my league as a player.  
But for Spassky and Kasparov, it probably did play "stupid" as you 
suggest.
