Perhaps modems are still being made and made use of to a much smaller degree than they were ten years ago, but the technology hasn't seen much advancement in that time. I wouldn't consider it modern - just still around. Don't get me wrong - I know that modems still have a certain value, that some people are just stuck with them, that it can be fun to dial up once in a while just to remember what it was like, but in my mind modems are a stale and fading technology. (Correct me if I'm wrong, please.) > Many sysops have their systems set to ignore calls slower than some preset > modem speed, usually around 9,600bps, thus the modem will answer but the > system will ignore the call and it'll time out and drop the connection. I remember trying, a few years ago, to connect to one thing or another at a very very low speed just for kicks. I didn't even get that far - the handshake never ended. Who knows what happened - it could have just been a crappy winmodem on the other end or something, but it didn't work. Anyway, whatever the cause our 300 baud friend may run into a few issues as this project progresses. dm --- SBBSecho 2.11-Win32* Origin: electronic chicken bbs - bbs.electronicchicken.com (1:229/200) SEEN-BY: 10/1 34/999 120/228 123/500 128/2 222/2 249/303 250/306 261/20 38 100 SEEN-BY: 261/1381 1404 1406 1410 1418 266/1413 280/1027 320/119 393/68 396/45 SEEN-BY: 633/260 267 285 690/734 712/848 800/432 801/161 189 2222/700 2320/100 SEEN-BY: 2320/105 109 200 2905/0 @PATH: 229/200 426 123/500 261/38 633/260 267 |
