"Modern" as I used it was more of a joke. Perhaps modems are still being
made and made use of to a much smaller degree than they were ten years ago,
but the technology hasn't seen much advancement in that time. I wouldn't
consider it modern - just still around. Don't get me wrong - I know that
modems still have a certain value, that some people are just stuck with them,
that it can be fun to dial up once in a while just to remember what it was
like, but in my mind modems are a stale and fading technology. (Correct me
if I'm wrong, please.)

I remember trying, a few years ago, to connect to one thing or another at a
very very low speed just for kicks. I didn't even get that far - the
handshake never ended. Who knows what happened - it could have just been a
crappy winmodem on the other end or something, but it didn't work. Anyway,
whatever the cause our 300 baud friend may run into a few issues as this
project progresses.
